Why Circuits Need Filters
Where this whole lesson is heading
  • A capacitor and an inductor oppose current differently at every frequency. That one fact is what lets a circuit sort signals by frequency at all.
  • Look at what sits in parallel with the output and you have read the circuit — a capacitor means low-pass, an inductor means high-pass.
  • Cutoff is not a wall. At the cutoff frequency 70.7% still gets through. Filters attenuate; they do not cut.

One wire usually carries both the signal you want and things you do not — and almost always the two sit at different frequencies. A filter separates them by frequency, not by size.

  • EMI filter
  • The smoothing capacitor in a power supply passes DC (0 Hz) and strips the 100 Hz ripple — a low-pass filter through and through.
  • The EMI filter at the mains inlet of a washing machine or switching board keeps high-frequency noise from escaping back into the house wiring.
  • The 0.1 µF capacitor across an IC's supply pins shunts high-frequency noise to ground right where it is created.
  • A radio's tuning circuit is a resonant filter that admits one narrow band and rejects the rest.
  • A loudspeaker crossover sends bass to the woofer and treble to the tweeter using two different filters.

  • Reactance — the opposition to current from a capacitor or inductor, in ohms like resistance, but changing with frequency.
  • Pass band — the range of frequencies a filter lets through nearly untouched; outside it is the stop band.
  • Decibel (dB) — a scale that squeezes big ratios into small numbers. Half the power is −3 dB; a tenth of the voltage is −20 dB.
  • Decade — a distance along the frequency axis equal to a factor of ten. From 100 Hz to 1 kHz is one decade.
  • Phase angle — how many degrees the output wave lags or leads the input. A filter always produces one; it does not only change size.
  • Q — how sharp the peak of a resonant circuit is. High Q selects a frequency keenly but over a narrow band.
The Key: Resistance That Depends on Frequency

A resistor opposes current equally at every frequency. A capacitor and an inductor do not — their opposition changes with frequency, and it is called reactance. That single fact is what makes filters possible.

XC = 1 / (2πfC)

Higher frequency, lower XC — a capacitor blocks DC and passes high frequencies. At 0 Hz it is infinite: an open circuit.

XL = 2πfL

Higher frequency, higher XL — an inductor passes DC easily and obstructs high frequencies, the exact opposite of a capacitor.

A capacitor there shunts high frequencies to ground, so it is a low-pass. An inductor there shunts low frequencies, so it is a high-pass. That rule reads every filter without memorising pictures.
The Four Basic Filters

Try the three-second rule from the previous section on all four first: look at each drawing, decide for yourself what is parallel with the output, and only then read the caption. A few rounds of that and you will never need to memorise these pictures.

RC low-pass

R C in out

C across the output shunts highs to ground · fc = 1/(2πRC)

Where you meet it — the most common filter on a real board
  • Cleaning noise off a sensor line before it reaches a microcontroller input.
  • Debouncing a pushbutton, so the voltage rises smoothly instead of chattering.
  • Smoothing a PWM output into a steady average DC voltage.
📐 Example: R 10 kΩ with C 100 nF gives fc ≈ 159 Hz — a slowly changing temperature signal passes intact while kilohertz noise is stripped away.

RC high-pass

C R in out

Swap R and C and the response flips · same fc formula

Where you meet it — its main job is to strip DC and keep the signal
  • Coupling between amplifier stages, passing the signal without dragging the previous stage's bias along.
  • The AC button on an oscilloscope is exactly this filter: press it and the DC level vanishes, leaving the ripple to look at.
  • Removing 50 Hz hum and wind rumble from a microphone.
📐 Example: C 1 µF with R 10 kΩ gives fc ≈ 16 Hz — below the audible band, so all the sound passes while DC is blocked completely.

RL low-pass

L R in out

L blocks highs on the way in · fc = R/(2πL)

Where you meet it — in high-current power stages, where a resistor would simply get hot
  • The choke in a mains EMI filter, stopping board noise from escaping into the house wiring.
  • The inductor in a switching supply, smoothing chopped high-frequency current into steady DC.
  • The R-Factor part on a top-loader board is an inductor doing this job.
📐 Example: L 1 mH with R 100 Ω gives fc ≈ 16 kHz — 50 Hz mains passes easily while tens-of-kilohertz switching noise is held back.

RL high-pass

R L in out

L across the output shunts lows · fc = R/(2πL)

Where you meet it — the rarest of the four, because blocking low frequencies needs a large inductor, far bulkier and dearer than a capacitor
  • Loudspeaker crossovers, on the side that must keep bass out of the tweeter.
  • Radio-frequency circuits, where the frequencies are so high that a tiny inductor suffices.
  • For everyday work an RC high-pass is chosen almost every time instead.
📐 Example: L 100 µH with R 50 Ω gives fc ≈ 80 kHz. To reach speech frequencies the inductor would have to be a hundred times larger.
🤔 So which one, RC or RL? They do the same job; the difference is practical.
RC belongs on signal lines. Capacitors are small, cheap and radiate no magnetic field, and signal currents are tiny, so the resistor never gets warm.
RL belongs on power lines. Putting a resistor in the path of several amps means heat and wasted voltage, whereas an inductor obstructs only the high frequencies and passes the useful current at almost no loss.
Short version: a filter on a signal line means look for a capacitor; one on a mains line means look for a choke.
fc = 1 / (2πRC)   ·   fc = R / (2πL)

Both formulas come from one condition — the point where reactance equals resistance. No need to memorise them separately.

🧮 Worked example, one step at a time: R = 1 kΩ and C = 0.1 µF
① Convert to ohms and farads first: R = 1,000 Ω, C = 0.1 µF = 1 × 10⁻⁷ F
② Multiply the bottom out: 2π × 1,000 × 1 × 10⁻⁷ ≈ 6.28 × 10⁻⁴
③ Take the reciprocal: fc = 1 ÷ 0.000628 ≈ 1,591 Hz
So a 160 Hz signal passes almost untouched, while 16 kHz is cut to roughly a tenth.
3 dBCutoff and −3 dB

Cutoff is not a wall. At fc the signal is still 70.7% of what went in. It counts as "cut" because that is where the power is halved (0.707² = 0.5), which works out to exactly −3 dB — hence the universal marker.

📏 Two words to know before the table below
A decibel (dB) is a scale that squeezes big ratios into small, readable numbers. Three landmarks are enough: full signal = 0 dB, 70.7% left = −3 dB, a tenth left = −20 dB. A negative number means a reduction.
A decade is a distance along the frequency axis equal to a factor of ten. From 100 Hz to 1 kHz is one decade, and 1 kHz to 10 kHz is another one of exactly the same size, even though the numbers are further apart.

📐 ฟิลเตอร์ที่มีอุปกรณ์เก็บพลังงาน 1 ตัว (C หรือ L หนึ่งตัว) เรียกว่า อันดับหนึ่ง ความชันคงที่ที่ −20 dB ต่อ decade · ถ้าต้องการชันกว่านี้ต้องต่อหลายชั้น สองชั้นได้ −40 dB/decade แต่แลกมาด้วยการเลื่อนเฟสที่มากขึ้นและวงจรที่แกว่งง่ายขึ้น 📐 A filter with one energy-storing part (a single C or L) is first order and rolls off at a steady −20 dB per decade. Steeper needs more stages — two gives −40 dB/decade, at the cost of more phase shift and a circuit that is easier to make ring.

🔎 ลองอันนี้: อยู่โหมดผ่านความถี่ต่ำ แล้วเลื่อนความถี่สัญญาณไปให้ตรงเส้นประ จะเห็นตัวเลขหยุดที่ 70.7% พอดี นั่นคือ −3 dB · จากนั้นกดโหมด RLC แล้วลากค่า R ลงให้ต่ำ ยอดกราฟจะแหลมขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ และแถบผ่านแคบลง — นั่นคือค่า Q ที่สูงขึ้น และเป็นหลักการที่วิทยุใช้เลือกสถานีเดียวจากคลื่นทั้งอากาศ 🔎 Try this: in low-pass, slide the signal frequency onto the dashed line and the number stops at exactly 70.7% — that is −3 dB. Then switch to RLC and drag R down: the peak sharpens and the band narrows. That is Q rising, and it is how a radio picks one station out of the whole sky.
XCResonance: When XL Cancels XC

XC falls with frequency while XL rises, so there must be one frequency where the two are equal. Because they act 180° apart, they cancel completely and leave only R. That frequency is the resonant frequency.

f0 = 1 / (2π√(LC))

R is not in the formula. It does not move the peak — it decides how sharp or blunt the peak is.

⏭️ กล่องนี้ข้ามได้ในรอบแรก — รู้แค่ว่า "R น้อย ยอดแหลม" ก็พอสำหรับตอนนี้ กลับมาดูสูตรตอนต้องออกแบบเองก็ทัน ⏭️ Skip this box on a first read — "less R, sharper peak" is enough for now. Come back to the formulas when you have one to design.

Q = (1/R)·√(L/C)  ·  BW = f0 / Q

High Q means a sharp peak and a narrow band; low Q means a wide one.

In a series circuit the voltage across L and across C each reaches Q times the input — they only cancel when added together. That is why an induction stove running from a 310 V bus normally shows nearly 800 V at the IGBT collector, and why the parts must be rated far above the supply.

That frequency is the real fc. Compare it with the calculation — a few percent apart is normal, given component tolerances.

Confirm with the phase

At fc a first-order filter always shifts the output by 45° — a sharper confirmation than eyeballing amplitude.

A ×1 probe adds tens of pF in parallel with the circuit under test, dragging the measured fc below the true value in high-impedance circuits. Always use ×10 for high-frequency or high-impedance work.

⏭️ Next level — skip on a first read
Every capacitor has parasitic inductance in its leads and body, and above its self-resonance it behaves as an inductor. That is why small ones are added in parallel with large ones, rather than fitting one big one.
High Q means a narrow band — a small frequency drift loses the signal entirely, and the circuit rings more easily.
Three things to remember
  • A filter sorts signals by frequency, not by size, and it can do so because the reactance of a capacitor and an inductor changes with frequency, in opposite directions.
  • Look at what is parallel with the output — a capacitor means low-pass, an inductor high-pass. The cutoff is where reactance equals resistance.
  • At fc 70.7% still passes, and two decades out 1% remains. A filter is always a slope, never a wall.
