What is an IC?
  • IC = Integrated Circuit — many components (transistors, resistors, diodes, capacitors) built together on one piece of silicon
  • A chip the size of a fingernail can hold billions of transistors
  • Instead of wiring dozens of discrete parts → one IC does the job
  • The silicon die is sealed in plastic/ceramic, leaving only the pins exposed for use
Simple analogy

Discrete parts (R, C, transistors) are like laying bricks one by one. An IC is like a prefab module: a whole circuit pre-built in one package — you just connect its input/output pins.

🔗 IC สร้างจากทรานซิสเตอร์จำนวนมหาศาล — ทบทวนทรานซิสเตอร์ตัวเดี่ยวได้ในบท ทรานซิสเตอร์ ก่อนมาดูว่ามันถูกรวมเป็นชิปได้อย่างไร 🔗 An IC is built from huge numbers of transistors — review the single transistor in the Transistor lesson before seeing how they are integrated into a chip.
Why Integrate? & Scale of Integration

Benefits of integration

  • Far smaller — saves board space
  • Cheaper in mass production
  • More reliable — fewer solder joints to fail
  • Low power and fast thanks to short internal distances

IC (Package)IC Packages

A "package" is the casing around the die and how its pins are arranged — broadly two families:

🕳️ Through-hole (เสียบรู) 🕳️ Through-hole

DIP (Dual In-line Package) — two rows of legs that push into breadboard/PCB holes. Great for beginners and prototyping.

📌 SMD / SMT (ติดผิวหน้า) 📌 SMD / SMT (surface-mount)

SOIC, QFP, QFN, BGA — tiny/flat leads soldered onto the PCB surface. Very compact, used in real products, but hard to hand-solder.

Pin 1⭐ Pin Numbering & Finding Pin 1
notch 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Pin 1 DIP-8 top view — count counter-clockwise from Pin 1
  • Always find Pin 1 first — look for the half-circle notch at one end, or a dot printed by pin 1's corner
  • With the notch up/left → Pin 1 is the pin at the bottom-left of the notch
  • Count counter-clockwise down the left side, then back up the right side
  • The pin diagonally opposite Pin 1 is the highest number
  • Inserting it backwards can destroy the IC instantly — always check Pin 1
Analog vs Digital ICs

Work with continuous signals (smoothly varying voltage) — e.g. op-amps, the 7805 regulator, audio ICs.

🔢 IC ดิจิทัล (Digital) 🔢 Digital ICs

Work with logic 0/1 (HIGH/LOW) — e.g. 74xx logic gates, counters, memory, microcontrollers.

🔀 บางตัวเป็น Mixed-signal มีทั้งสองส่วน เช่น ADC/DAC ที่แปลงอนาล็อก ↔ ดิจิทัล และไมโครคอนโทรลเลอร์ที่มี ADC ในตัว 🔀 Some are mixed-signal with both — e.g. ADC/DAC chips that convert analog ↔ digital, and microcontrollers with a built-in ADC.
Reading a Datasheet (Basics)

The part number printed on the IC (e.g. NE555, LM358) lets you find its datasheet. What to check first:

  • Pinout / Pin configuration:
  • Absolute Maximum Ratings:
  • Typical Application:
  • Description: what the chip does
  • Pinout / Pin configuration: what each pin does (most important)
  • Supply voltage (VCC): the usable range, e.g. 4.5–16 V
  • Absolute Maximum Ratings: never-exceed values (voltage/current/temp) or it fails
  • Typical Application: example circuits with part values
NE555 = LM555 = SE555 📌 The prefix often marks the maker (LM/NE/SN/CD…) and the number is the model — same function across makers, e.g. NE555 = LM555 = SE555.

Handling & Cautions
(VCC/GND)
  • Static (ESD) can kill an IC — especially CMOS/MCUs; touch ground or wear a wrist strap before handling
  • Insert the right way round — match Pin 1 to the socket/PCB marking
  • Use an IC socket for prototyping — easy to swap, and no soldering heat on the IC
  • Never exceed the rated supply, and never reverse VCC/GND
  • Mind soldering heat — solder quickly or use a socket
