(Transformer)Stage 1 — Transformer

The transformer steps 220 V AC mains down to a usable level (e.g. 9 V or 12 V AC) and provides isolation from the mains for safety. The voltage ratio follows the turns ratio.

Vp / Vs = Np / Ns

(Rectifier)Stage 2 — Rectifier

(Pulsating DC)

Diodes conduct in one direction only, "folding" the AC wave into the positive direction to produce pulsating DC.

Diode drop
(Half-wave)Half-wave10.318 × Vpk50 Hz~0.7 V

The full-wave bridge is most common — it uses 100% of the AC wave and its 100 Hz ripple is easier to filter. 📘 See rectifier circuits in the Diode lesson.

(Filter Capacitor)Stage 3 — Filter Capacitor

A capacitor (usually a large electrolytic) is placed across the load. It charges up to the peak then discharges into the load while the input falls, smoothing the voltage and leaving only a small ripple.

Vripple(pp) ≈ Iload / (fr × C)

Iload = กระแสโหลด (A)  |  fr = ความถี่ระลอก (50 Hz ครึ่งคลื่น / 100 Hz เต็มคลื่น)  |  C = ตัวเก็บประจุกรอง (F)

Iload = load current (A)  |  fr = ripple frequency (50 Hz half-wave / 100 Hz full-wave)  |  C = filter capacitor (F)

Example: 0.5 A load, full-wave bridge (fr = 100 Hz), C = 2200 µF

Vripple = 0.5 / (100 × 0.0022) ≈ 2.3 Vpp

Larger C → smaller ripple → smoother DC (but a bigger, costlier capacitor)

(Voltage Regulator)Stage 4 — Voltage Regulator

IC ตระกูล 78xx78xx-series ICs

A 3-pin IC (Input / GND / Output) that holds the output voltage constant despite input ripple or load changes. The number gives the output voltage.

Dropout: the input must stay at least ~2 V above the output, otherwise the regulator "drops out" and the output starts to ripple again.

Alternative: Zener Diode

A simple regulator uses a reverse-biased Zener diode with a current-limiting resistor. The Zener "clamps" the voltage at VZ — suitable for low-current loads.

📘 See how Zeners work in the Diode lesson.

SCR / TRIAC / DIAC 🔗 To make the DC output adjustable rather than fixed, replace the rectifier diodes with SCRs and control the firing angle — a controlled rectifier, as used in battery chargers and welders. SCRs also build the crowbar circuit that protects a load from overvoltage. See the Thyristors (SCR / TRIAC / DIAC) lesson.
(Linear vs Switching)Linear vs Switching

Both do the same job — turning a higher voltage into a steady, fixed output — but they differ in how they deal with the leftover voltage:

  • Linear — throws the excess away as heat → clean power, but wasteful and hot.
  • Switching — switches on/off very fast and delivers only what's needed, so there's almost no excess to waste → efficient and cool.

1. Linear PSU (แหล่งจ่ายไฟเชิงเส้น)

Example: classic bench supplies such as the UNI-T UTP3315TFL-II

Filter cap→ Linear Regulator→ DC Output

The first stages are detailed in the sections above — the key point is that the linear regulator burns the excess voltage off as heat.

Ploss = (Vin − Vout) × I

Example: 35 V after the filter, output 5 V at 1 A
Output power Pout = 5 × 1 = 5 W
but loss = (35 − 5) × 1 = 30 W of heat! → needs a large heatsink

💡 A linear regulator's efficiency ≈ Vout / Vin — the bigger the drop, the more is wasted (this example = 5/35 ≈ 14%). Real designs keep Vin − Vout small, giving the ~40–60% shown in the table below.

2. Switching PSU (SMPS)

Mean Well

Examples: phone chargers, laptop adapters, PC PSUs, Mean Well units

HF transformer→ Rectifier→ Filter→ DC Output

The heart is a MOSFET switching on/off very fast (e.g. 100,000×/s = 100 kHz, up to MHz). The high frequency lets the transformer shrink dramatically (50 Hz = big, 100 kHz = tiny).

Voltage is set by PWM — adjusting the "pulse width" (duty cycle): the longer it's ON, the higher the output:

💡 Note: offline supplies (phone chargers, PC PSUs) use a transformer to isolate the output from the mains for safety, while non-isolated DC-DC converters (e.g. buck/boost modules like the LM2596) use just an inductor — no transformer.

A simple "water" analogy

Linear

Like opening the tap full, then pinching a valve to a trickle — 35 L in, 5 L used, 30 L wasted (= heat).

Switching

Like pulsing the tap on–off–on–off, so the average is exactly what you need — very little is wasted.
