How It Works

A transformer is two coils on one iron core with no electrical connection between them — energy crosses over purely through a changing magnetic field.

1
AC enters the primary

Alternating current builds a constantly changing magnetic field in the core.

2
The core guides the flux across

The core acts as a pipe for the flux so nearly all of it reaches the second coil.

3
The secondary induces a voltage

By Faraday's law, changing flux induces a voltage — how much depends on the number of turns.

Feed it DC and the flux sits still — no output at all, and the primary is left as a few bare ohms that will draw current until it burns. Transformers are AC-only (try the "DC input" mode below).
The Turns Ratio — The One Formula
V₁ / V₂ = N₁ / N₂ = I₂ / I₁
Note the current ratio is inverted — the low-voltage side is the high-current side

Why is current inverted? Because power must match on both sides (P = V × I). A transformer creates no energy — it only trades voltage for current.

Where you meet it
Step-Down N₁ > N₂ (แรงดันลด กระแสเพิ่ม)(V down, I up) อะแดปเตอร์ 220V→12V, แหล่งจ่ายไฟแบบเชิงเส้น, หม้อแปลงหน้าบ้าน220V→12V adapters, linear power supplies, pole transformers
Step-Up N₂ > N₁ (แรงดันเพิ่ม กระแสลด)(V up, I down) หม้อแปลงแรงสูงในเตาไมโครเวฟ (220V → 2,000V), คอยล์จุดระเบิด, สายส่งไฟฟ้าแรงสูงThe HV transformer in a microwave (220V → 2,000V), ignition coils, grid transmission
Ground separation for safe scoping of non-isolated boards — see switching PSU
One winding with a tap Variacs, cheap 110/220V converters — no isolation
Clamped on one wire = a 1-turn primary Measuring current without breaking the circuit — clamp meters and the sensor on an induction hob board
⚠️ ห้ามเปิดวงจรขดทุติยภูมิของ CT ขณะที่ยังมีกระแสไหลในสายที่คล้องอยู่ — แรงดันจะพุ่งสูงมากจนอันตรายถึงชีวิตและฉนวนพัง ต้องลัดขั้วมันไว้ก่อนถอดเสมอ ⚠️ Never open-circuit a CT's secondary while current flows in the wire it surrounds — the voltage rises to lethal levels and destroys the insulation. Short its terminals before disconnecting.

12 V 🔎 Try this: in "with losses" mode, drag RL from 200 Ω down to 2 Ω — the output sags without touching V1 or the turns. That is a transformer's voltage regulation, and it is why a cheap adapter reads 14 V unloaded but 12 V in use.

(I²R)
Resistance of the copper — rises with the square of current Heavier load → hotter and more voltage sag
Hysteresis + eddy currents — present whenever it is energised Warm and humming even with nothing plugged in
Some flux misses the second coil Output slightly below the calculated value
เพื่อตัดทางเดินของ กระแสไหลวน (eddy current) ให้สั้นลง — หลักการเดียวกับที่เตาแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้าใช้ สร้าง ความร้อน แต่ในหม้อแปลงเราต้องการ กำจัด มัน 💡 Why is the core made of thin stacked laminations instead of solid iron? To break up the path of eddy currents — the very effect an induction hob uses to make heat is the one a transformer must suppress.

VA is not watts: transformers are rated in VA because what heats the winding is current, not the real power the load consumes — a poor power factor draws more current than the wattage suggests.

If wrong
ความต้านทานขดปฐมภูมิPrimary resistance ไม่กี่โอห์มถึงหลายร้อยโอห์ม (รอบมาก = โอห์มสูง)A few ohms to a few hundred (more turns = more ohms) OL = ขดขาด (มักขาดที่ เทอร์มอลฟิวส์ในตัว ใต้เทปพันขด ไม่ใช่ลวดขาด)OL = open (often the built-in thermal fuse under the tape, not the wire)
ความต้านทานขดทุติยภูมิSecondary resistance ต่ำกว่าขดปฐมภูมิเสมอ (ในหม้อแปลง step-down)Always lower than the primary (in a step-down) 0 Ω สนิท = ช็อตรอบA dead 0 Ω suggests shorted turns
Must be OL — the coils are not electrically connected Any reading = failed insulation, mains on the low-voltage side. Scrap it.
A reading means leakage to the frame — the RCD will trip
About 10% above the rating with no load — normal Very low, or collapsing under load = partially shorted turns
⚠️ ช็อตรอบ (shorted turns) วัดด้วยโอห์มมิเตอร์แทบไม่เจอ เพราะขดที่ช็อตไปไม่กี่รอบทำให้ค่าโอห์มเปลี่ยนน้อยมาก อาการที่บอกได้จริงคือ ร้อนจัดและเสียงฮัมดังผิดปกติทั้งที่ยังไม่ได้ต่อโหลด และกินกระแสด้านเข้าสูงผิดปกติ ⚠️ Shorted turns barely show on an ohmmeter — a few shorted turns change the reading very little. The real symptoms are getting hot and humming loudly with no load connected, plus abnormally high input current.
Safety
  • A microwave HV transformer delivers 2,000 V or more — never energise it with the case open, and always discharge the HV capacitor first.
  • An auto transformer gives no isolation — its "low-voltage" side is still tied to the mains.
  • Never short the secondary while energised — the winding burns within seconds.
  • A replacement must match both the voltage and the VA rating or exceed them; undersized runs hot and fails.
  • Many units hide a thermal fuse inside the winding that cannot be replaced — once open, the transformer is scrap.
