Zone 1 — The Front Line: Main Fuse & Thermostats

L and N pass through the noise filter, which keeps the microwave's RF out of the household mains, with the main fuse (8A–15A) guarding the way in. Next come two thermal cutouts — one on the oven ceiling, one on the magnetron body. Both are NC (normally closed) switches: if either point overheats, the contacts open and kill the whole system to prevent a fire.

Rule: a charred main fuse means never just fit a new one and plug in

A 15A fuse blown black means something big has shorted through inside (usually a door switch or the HV capacitor). Find the short first, or every new fuse you fit will blow too.

Pro tip: "It runs 3 minutes, goes completely dead, then works again after half an hour"

This is not a faulty board — the thermostat is doing exactly its job. The real cause is a cooling fan that isn't spinning, so the unit overheats and the thermostat cuts power; once it cools it resets itself. Go straight to the fan motor, don't replace the board.

Zone 2 — The 3-Switch Door Interlock

A microwave must never leak radiation at the user, so engineers fit three microswitches that work in concert. This is the section that catches out experienced techs, because the middle switch works the opposite way to the other two.

The last line of defence: it gates the feed to the heating relay and tells the board the door is properly shut.

L FUSE Latch A (NO) Latch A (NO) Latch B (NO) Latch B (NO) Power Relay Power Relay → หม้อแปลงแรงสูง → HV transformer MONITOR NC — ประตูเปิดอยู่ = ต่อถึงกัน NC — closed while the door is open N
The sacrificial mechanism — why closing the door blows the fuse

Normally the monitor switch opens first as the door closes, and only then does Latch A make contact — so the two are never closed at the same time. But if Latch A's contacts weld shut, the next time the door opens the monitor closes while L is still live: a dead L–N short that draws enormous current and destroys the main fuse instantly. It is a deliberate suicide by design — far better than letting the oven fire with the door open.

How to test, and the replacement rule
  • Always disconnect the wires first. Set the meter to continuity, probe one switch at a time and press its lever.
  • NO type: pressed must beep, released must be completely silent — no residual resistance allowed.
  • NC type (monitor): released must beep, pressed must be silent.
  • After a blown-fuse job, always replace all three door switches as a set. Swapping just one leaves the mechanism fighting itself and it will fail again.
  • Photograph the wiring before unplugging anything. Reconnect the monitor switch the wrong way round and the oven blows up the moment you plug it in.
Zone 3 — The Control Board & Relays

Part of the 220V branches into a low-voltage transformer that produces 9V/12V for the board (if it goes open, the display is completely dead). The MCU then commands three relays that switch the 220V out to separate load groups.

What it tells you when diagnosing
All three share one relay, so if the fan spins but the plate doesn't, that part itself is dead — not the board
If everything runs but the water stays cold, suspect these contacts before the HV side
The grill heating element in the oven ceiling For "microwaves fine but won't grill", measure the element (30–50 Ω) and these contacts
Start" ⚠️ The classic: "It starts cooking the moment I plug it in, before I press Start"

Unplug, then ohm across the big relay's contacts. Reading 0 Ω with no power on the coil means the contacts have welded shut — replace the relay.

The board's own supply: older boards use a small iron transformer whose 220V primary tends to go open — lift a leg, ohm it, and replace it if it reads OL. Newer boards use a switching IC (e.g. LNK364): if the board is dead, inspect the IC body for cracks and check the fusible resistor upstream — it almost always fails together with the IC.

🔗 This kind of switching supply is covered in detail in the Switching PSU (LNK304) lesson

Membrane keypad: "some presses register, some don't, you have to press hard" comes from a creased ribbon tail or oxide on the contacts. Start by gently cleaning the tail with contact cleaner; if the silver conductive trace itself is broken, bridge it with a conductive silver pen or replace the whole membrane.

Zone 4 — High Voltage & the Voltage Doubler

The HV transformer produces at most about 2,000 volts AC, but the magnetron needs 4,000 volts DC to fire. So engineers pair an HV capacitor with an HV diode as a voltage doubler, pumping the voltage to twice its value across the two halves of the AC cycle.

🔗 Walk the doubler stroke by stroke in steps 8–9 of the interactive circuit in the next section

1

(Charging)

Charging stroke

When the AC swings to the polarity the diode conducts, the 2,000V runs through it to ground. In this stroke the HV capacitor acts like a water tank, storing 2,000V inside itself.

2

(Firing)

Doubling & firing stroke

A fraction of a second later the polarity flips, the diode blocks, and the transformer's 2,000V is pushed in series with the 2,000V held in the capacitor — 4,000V DC straight into the magnetron.

☠️ Bleeder Resistor มีไว้ให้เห็น ไม่ได้มีไว้ให้ไว้ใจ ☠️ The bleeder resistor is there to be seen, not to be trusted

On the schematic you'll see a resistor symbol wired in parallel inside the HV capacitor — the bleeder resistor, which slowly drains the 2,000V to ground after unplugging. But if that resistor has gone open internally, the cap still sits there holding 2,000V waiting for your hand. Professionals therefore treat it as an absolute rule: never trust the circuit, discharge it by hand every single time.

The Whole Circuit, Simplified

Redraw all 4 zones as one circuit and it looks like this — the red line is L (live) running down the left, the blue line is N on the right, and each load group bridges between them like the rungs of a ladder. Every rung needs a complete L→load→N path before it can work.

A faulty oven is being simulated — see which rung loses power and match it against what the customer describes

Step 1 — the whole oven is one ladder: the left rail is L (after the top chain) and the right rail is N, with each load group bridging across. Every rung needs a complete L → load → N path, and the rungs are independent — which is exactly why "grill dead, microwave fine" is possible.
Press 🚪 door and ▶ Start above to see which rung runs when, then pick a fault below to practise diagnosing.

Step 2 — the top chain everything depends on: L must pass the main fuse → oven thermal cutout → magnetron thermal cutout → Latch A before it becomes the left rail that feeds every rung.
If any one of them opens, the entire oven is dead, not just one function — so "plugged in, completely silent, no display" always starts here (try the "thermal cutout open" fault).
Both cutouts are NC. Finding one open proves that spot really overheated: find the cause before replacing it.

Step 3 — rung 1 works as a set: the lamp, the cooling fan and the turntable motor sit in parallel behind a single relay.
So if some run and some do not, that specific part has failed — not the board. If none of them run, suspect the relay or the board's command instead. That one distinction saves half a day of hunting.

Step 4 — rung 2 is the grill element: it has its own relay because grilling and microwaving heat food in completely different ways (radiant heat from a coil vs. microwaves from the magnetron).
"Microwaves fine, grill dead" therefore points at this rung alone — check the element for continuity, then check that the grill relay's contacts actually close on command.

Step 5 — rung 3 has two switches in series: Latch B (confirming the door is truly shut) and the power relay (the board's Start command) — both must close before the HV transformer sees power.
That is why "plate spins, lamp on, fan running, but nothing heats" always points here first: rung 1 still works, so the top chain and the board are fine and the fault is confined to this rung (try the "Latch B never closes" fault).
Once this rung is complete, 2,000 V appears on the secondary — continue to steps 8–9.

Step 6 — rung 4 powers the brain: a small transformer drops the mains to a low voltage for the control board, the display and the keypad.
This rung is live whenever the oven is plugged in and the top chain is intact, which is why the display lights up before you press anything. So "the display works" only proves the top chain and this rung are fine — it says nothing about the others.
Conversely, a completely dead display sends you back to the top chain in step 2 before you ever suspect the board.

Step 7 — the bottom rung is the trap you must understand: the monitor switch bridges L to N directly with no load in between, and it is the NC type that closes when the door opens (the opposite of latches A and B, which close when the door shuts).
In normal use nothing happens: with the door closed the monitor simply sits open.
But if Latch A welds shut — select that fault and press the door button — the monitor closes while L is still live, creating a dead L–N short that instantly destroys the mains fuse. That sacrifice is deliberate: a blown fuse is far better than an oven that can fire with the door open.
So "the fuse blows every time the door is opened" means replacing the fuse alone will never fix it — the whole interlock set must be replaced.

Step 8 — the HV section, stroke 1 (charging the capacitor): once rung 3 is complete the HV transformer produces about 2,000 V AC on its secondary.
On the first half-cycle the HV diode conducts to the chassis, so current flows through the capacitor and charges it to ~2,000 V. The magnetron is not firing yet.
Note the bleeder resistor drawn across the capacitor: it is meant to drain the charge after unplugging — but never trust it. If it has failed open, the capacitor sits there holding 2,000 V.

Step 9 — stroke 2 (they add up to 4,000 V): when the mains reverses, the diode blocks and the capacitor's charge cannot escape. The transformer's 2,000 V and the capacitor's 2,000 V now sit in series = about 4,000 V DC across the magnetron, and the microwaves start.
That is what makes it a voltage doubler — twice the voltage without winding a bigger transformer.
A shorted diode lets current flow continuously and overloads the transformer: a loud hum, then the HV fuse blows. An open magnetron filament leaves everything looking and sounding normal with no heat at all (try switching between those two faults).
⚠ This capacitor holds 2,000 V long after unplugging — always discharge it with 1,000 V insulated pliers before touching anything.

Pro tip: why your multimeter can't test an HV diode

A typical digital multimeter only puts out 2–3V on diode range, while an HV diode is many diodes stacked in series inside — that voltage simply cannot push through, so it reads OL in both directions and techs wrongly condemn it. The correct method is to put a 9V battery in series with the diode and measure the voltage across it: current must flow one way only (about 5–7V). Conducting both ways, or neither, means the diode is faulty.

(Pictorial Wiring)Reading the Pictorial Wiring Diagram

The schematic tells you how the current flows; the pictorial diagram tells you where each wire physically plugs in. A technician reads both together.

  • Red wire (Line — L): the live conductor. It passes the main fuse first, then waits at the door switches and the board's relay contacts for the command to switch.
  • Blue wire (Neutral — N): routed as a network to every end device — turntable motor, fan, lamp, grill element and transformer.
  • Green/brown wire (Earth): the ground. Note that the HV diode (the black stick beside the capacitor) is always bolted to the chassis for its ground return.
  • On some models the thermal fuse sits in the N line, not the L line — if it opens, the circuit is just as incomplete and the oven is just as dead. Don't only probe the L side.
  • The HV fuse hides inside a milky white plastic tube between the transformer and the capacitor. Pry it open to check: if it's blown, everything runs normally but nothing heats.
Rules for disconnecting and refitting wires (where beginners come unstuck)
  2. Always photograph before removing anything — a wide shot plus close-ups of the door switch terminals and the HV capacitor.
  4. Check every spade connector is tight — it must feel firm. A loose one will arc until the plastic housing melts and catches fire; crimp it properly before refitting.
  6. Dress the high-voltage wiring — the transformer-to-magnetron leads must never rest against the chassis. Vibration wears through the insulation and 4,000V jumps to the case. Cable-tie them clear.
Fault-Diagnosis Clinic

Identify the symptom first, then aim your checks — it saves an enormous amount of time compared with probing the whole oven part by part:

Symptom 1: "Close the door and the fuse blows; a new fuse blows again"

Root cause: Latch switch A has welded shut, so the monitor switch sacrifices itself by shorting L to N

Repair steps: test all three switches disconnected, then replace all three as a set — never just the failed one. Also check for a sagging door or worn latch hooks throwing off the switching sequence, or it will fail again.

Symptom 2: "Plate spins, lamp on, fan runs — but the water stays cold"

Read the circuit first: the turntable, fan and lamp all come off the main relay. All three working means the board is commanding correctly and the door is properly shut — don't waste time on sensors or door switches.

Repair steps: it's the power relay (bad contacts) or the HV side. Work in order: blown HV fuse → open secondary winding (OL) → dried-out capacitor → faulty diode → worn-out magnetron.

Symptom 3: "Loud humming, then the HV fuse blows"

Root cause: the HV diode has shorted through (0 Ω), so the transformer dumps straight to ground — it groans under the load and the HV fuse gives out

Repair steps: test the diode with the 9V battery method and check whether the capacitor has also shorted to its can. Always replace the diode together with the HV fuse, and torque the diode's ground bolt properly — if it's loose the diode cannot work and the oven still won't heat.

Symptom 4: "Everything runs, nothing sounds wrong, but the water is ice cold"

Root cause: the HV capacitor has dried out and no longer stores charge, so the magnetron never sees 4,000V — or the transformer secondary is open internally

Repair steps: measure the capacitor on the capacitance (F) range — it must match its printed 0.9–1.1 µF; if it has drifted low, replace it. Then measure the secondary to chassis: 90–150 Ω (OL means the transformer is finished).

🔵 อาการที่ 5: "ไฟหน้าจอติด แต่กด Start แล้วเครื่องไม่ยอมทำงาน" 🔵 Symptom 5: "The display lights up, but pressing Start does nothing"

Root cause: the secondary interlock / door-sensing switch (the bottom one) is dirty or not making contact, so the board never learns the door is shut

Repair steps: test the bottom switch disconnected — pressed it must beep cleanly. Replace it if it's open or shows residual resistance. If the switch is fine, check the membrane keypad for a dead Start button.

Symptom 6: "Microwaves fine, but won't grill"

Root cause: the grill element is open, or the grill relay's contacts have failed

Repair steps: the element must read 30–50 Ω, not open. Then check the grill relay contacts on the board — leave the HV side alone entirely, since the microwave function still works.

Symptom 7 (inverter models): "Runs for 3 seconds, then cuts out"

Root cause: a power device on the inverter board has shorted, tripping the protection circuit

Repair steps: pull the inverter board and cold-test it. The usual casualties are the IGBT (black 3-pin device on the heatsink — no pin pair may read 0 Ω), the bridge rectifier, and the on-board fuse, which almost always goes with the IGBT.

(Inverter)Inverter Microwaves

Flagship microwaves drop the heavy iron transformer and use an inverter board to feed the magnetron at high frequency instead. It can genuinely vary the power continuously (rather than pulsing full power on and off as transformer models do), so food cooks more evenly, and the oven is lighter and more efficient.

The absolute rule for inverter boards

Never probe the high-voltage side of a live inverter board with a multimeter. High voltage at tens of kilohertz will destroy the meter in your hand, and the energy can jump to you. The only safe method is to remove the board and ohm it out for shorts with the unit unplugged.

Bench Safety Rules
🔴 กฎการคายประจุ (HV Discharge Rule) — ต้องทำทุกครั้งก่อนซ่อม 🔴 The HV discharge rule — do this before every single repair
HV Capacitor
  2. Unplug from the wall first — but remember that unplugging does not remove the charge stored in the HV capacitor.
  4. Take long-nose pliers with 1,000V-rated insulated handles and bridge the metal tips across both terminals of the HV capacitor at once, holding for 3–5 seconds.
  6. Alternatively, put an insulated screwdriver on a capacitor terminal and lean its shaft against the steel chassis to dump the charge to ground.
  8. ⚠️ Never trust the capacitor's built-in bleeder resistor. If it has gone open, the cap is still sitting at 2,000V. Discharge it by hand, every time.
(Cold Test Only) 🟡 The high-voltage measurement rule (cold test only)
  2. Never probe the HV side with power on. A typical meter is rated 600–1,000V; this point carries 4,000V.
  4. Disconnect every wire from a part before measuring it, so you aren't reading neighbouring circuits through it.
  6. When measuring the secondary against the frame, scrape off the rust or varnish first so the probe touches bare steel — otherwise you'll read OL on a perfectly good transformer.
After the repair, before handing it back
  2. Verify every wire matches your photos, especially the monitor switch — reversed, it blows up the moment you plug in.
  4. Check the door closes flush, isn't sagging or twisted, and that its hooks actuate all three switches in the right sequence.
  6. Always test-heat with a cup of water in a ceramic mug. Never run it empty — with nothing to absorb the energy, it reflects back into the magnetron and destroys it.
