② สายดินสีเขียว-เหลืองที่ขันกับโครงเหล็กต้องขันกลับให้แน่นทุกครั้ง — โครงหม้ออยู่ห่างจากขั้วฮีตเตอร์ 220V แค่ไม่กี่มิลลิเมตร และถอดปลั๊กก่อนแกะทุกครั้ง ① Never bridge the thermal fuse with a piece of wire — it is the only thing standing between a stuck switch and a house fire.
② The green/yellow earth screw on the steel chassis goes back on, tight, every time — that chassis sits millimetres from a live 220 V element. And always unplug before opening the base.

Most people guess "it times it" or "it measures the rice" — both wrong. A mechanical rice cooker has neither a clock nor an electronic sensor. It rides on two pieces of physics, one about water and one about magnets:
- Boiling water pins the temperature at 100°C — while any water remains, the base cannot climb past ~100°C no matter how hard the element works; all the energy goes into turning water into steam
- A permanent magnet loses its pull at its Curie point — the magnet in the centre of the base is chosen to let go at roughly 103°C
Chain them together and you get something remarkably clever: while the rice still holds water the base stays at 100°C and the magnet keeps holding the switch down. The moment the water has all been absorbed and boiled away, the base temperature shoots up — it crosses 103°C, the magnet lets go, and a spring flicks the switch back to Warm. To this appliance, "the water is gone" is the definition of "the rice is done."

Interactive sim — watch the base temperature all the way to the moment the magnet lets go
1) Why a bigger batch takes longer: drag the amount from 2 cups to 8 and watch the 100°C plateau stretch while the release temperature stays put — more water simply takes longer to boil away
2) Low mains, longer cook: pull the voltage from 220 V down to 190 V and the real power drops with P = V²/R (to about 75%), stretching the cook time with nothing broken
3) A weak magnet means raw rice: press "weak magnet" — with less holding force the spring wins early, so it releases in the middle of the boiling plateau with half the water still there and the base never anywhere near the Curie point. That is exactly symptom 2 in the clinic below
Role |
|---|---|---|
Hidden inside the white fibreglass sleeve on the live wire, the first link in the whole circuit. It cuts power permanently if the base overheats (typically 165–185°C) — it never resets, and a replacement must match the original temperature rating. |
| 2 | แป้นแม่เหล็ก (Magnetic Switch)Magnetic temperature switch | ลูกแป้นกลมสปริงตรงกลางก้นหม้อ ที่ดันแนบกับหม้อในตลอดเวลา — คือเซ็นเซอร์เพียงตัวเดียวของหม้อรุ่นกลไก อาศัยจุดคูรีปล่อยสวิตช์เมื่อเกิน ~103°CThe spring-loaded disc in the centre of the base, always pressed against the inner pot — the only sensor a mechanical cooker has. It uses its Curie point to release the switch above ~103°C. |
A three-terminal (C / COOK / WARM) switch. Neutral arrives at C and is routed either to the main element or to the warming path — thrown by the lever you press and released by the magnet. |
The aluminium plate under the pot with silicone-sleeved spade terminals. Low resistance, 30–100Ω, drawing several hundred watts to bring the water to a boil. |
"3D" models add one on the lid (so condensation does not drip back onto the rice) and a band around the pot for even warming. |
Clipped to the side of the pot, it cycles the warming elements to hold about 70–80°C all day. It is a self-resetting device, unlike the thermal fuse. |
Red = Cook, green/amber = Warm. They sit across the 220 V line behind a 150kΩ current-limiting resistor (about 1.5 mA); without it a neon would die instantly. |
A green/yellow wire bolted to the steel chassis, used with a 3-pin plug. It carries no working current — it exists so any leakage has a path to earth that trips the RCD. |
An NTC thermistor replaces the magnet, a relay replaces the micro switch, a switching supply turns 220 V into 5 V for the boards, and a microcontroller makes every decision the mechanism used to make. |
A mechanical rice cooker circuit is startlingly simple: live passes the thermal fuse and waits at the element terminal, neutral arrives at the C terminal of the micro switch, and the switch simply routes it either to the main element (Cook) or to the warming path. Digital models swap the decision-maker from a magnet to a microcontroller, but the 220 V path is the same story.

Use buttons 1–6 for the mechanical circuit and 7–9 for the digital one. Press 🍚 Cook and let it run until the magnet releases by itself, and pick a fault to practise reading the probe badges.
Step 1 — three wires come in, but only two do the work: L and N deliver power to the element; earth (E) is merely bolted to the steel chassis and carries no current in normal operation. It exists for the day the element leaks into the body, so the current finds earth and the RCD trips before the user touches the pot.
The badges along the top are probe points along the path — always read them left to right.
About the moving dots: mains power is alternating current at 50 Hz, so the current reverses fifty times a second and neither wire is permanently an "in" or an "out". The dots only show that the loop is complete and current is flowing; they start at the live terminal simply because that is where you start when tracing a fault.
Step 2 — the thermal fuse is the first link on the live wire: buried in a white fibreglass sleeve, it is easy to miss because you cannot see it — yet 90% of "plugged in and completely dead" ends right here.
Unlike a thermostat it is permanent: it never closes again. And remember that a blown fuse means something did overheat. Replace the fuse without finding the cause and it will blow again (see the welded-switch case).
Step 3 — pressing the lever routes neutral to the main element: neutral arrives at terminal C; pressing the lever closes C onto the COOK side, putting the full 220 V across the main element (red lamp on).
At around 50Ω it draws I = 220/50 ≈ 4.4 A, close to 1,000 W — which is why the base heats so quickly.
Safety note: notice that this switch interrupts the neutral, while live reaches the element terminal through nothing but the fuse. That means the upper element terminal is at 220 V whenever the cooker is plugged in, whatever the switch is doing — throwing the switch or letting it pop up does not de-energise the appliance. Only unplugging does.
Step 4 — the magnet is the judge: the lever you pressed is held down by a permanent magnet against its spring. While water still boils, the base sits at 100°C and the magnet holds.
Once the water is gone and the base crosses ~103°C (the Curie point), the magnet loses its grip and the spring flicks the switch up — no timer, no sensor, just physics.
Press 🍚 and let it run to watch the magnet release on its own.
Step 5 — Warm mode routes power the other way: with the switch up, C now connects to the WARM side, so neutral runs through the warm thermostat into the lid and side elements (green lamp on).
Here is what people misread most often: the current leaving the lid/side elements must return through the main element to reach live — the whole lot is wired in series, not as separate circuits.
Step 6 — why current flows through the main element yet it stays cool: because this is a textbook voltage divider. The warming elements (~2,000Ω) sit in series with the main element (50Ω), so the loop current is only I = 220 ÷ 2,050 ≈ 107 mA.
Nearly all the voltage (~215 V) lands across the warming elements, leaving about 5 V across the main plate — in Warm mode the main element is effectively just a piece of wire. Total draw falls to roughly 24 W, against ~970 W while cooking.
Step 7 — a digital model must turn 220 V into 5 V first: the main board carries a switching power supply section (small yellow high-frequency transformer, a 7-pin IC, an electrolytic can) that produces 5 V DC for the controller and the display board.
The trap for beginners: yes, it reads 5 V — but half that board is still at mains potential, and the capacitor stays charged after unplugging. Never handle the board while it is plugged in.
Step 8 — the controller reads an NTC and talks to the display over UART: the magnet is replaced by an NTC thermistor in the base (hotter = lower resistance). The controller reads it and makes every decision the mechanism used to make, which is how it offers a menu of cooking programmes.
The two boards (power ↔ display) are joined by four wires: VCC / GND / TXD / RXD. If one works loose or gets chewed through, the boards stop understanding each other and the unit throws an error code and beeps even though the elements are perfectly fine.
Step 9 — the relay is the big bridge, and every element is wired in parallel: on command the relay coil pulls its contact in (that audible click) and feeds 220 V to the main, lid and side elements together, in parallel — the opposite of the mechanical model's series warming path.
So how does a digital cooker keep warm? Not with a divider: it pulses the relay on and off to hold an average temperature. That is why a digital cooker clicks quietly all day long.

Repair steps: unplug, open the base, find the white fibreglass sleeve on the live wire and buzz across it. Silence means it is open — fit a replacement of the same temperature rating. If the fuse is good (digital models), check for 5 V on the board; no 5 V means the on-board supply has failed.
⚠️ Always ask why it blew. Fuses rarely die of old age; this one usually accompanies a switch that refused to release (case 3).
Root cause: a tired magnet, a weak spring, or a warped inner pot that no longer sits flat on the disc
Repair steps: press the centre disc — it must spring back smoothly, not stick · set the inner pot in and check that its base sits flush (a dented pot is the most overlooked cause) · if the mechanism binds or the magnet is weak, replace the whole disc assembly.
💡 Try the "weak magnet" mode in the sim above: it releases while the water is still boiling.
Root cause: the micro-switch contacts have welded shut, or the lever mechanism is jammed
Repair steps: ohm the contacts with the switch released — it must read OL. Still conducting means welded: replace the switch, never file the contacts and carry on. This is the most dangerous fault in the appliance, because full power never stops; eventually the thermal fuse blows to prevent a fire. Find a blown fuse alongside a stuck switch and replace both.
Root cause: the warming path is open — and the number-one culprit is not the element but the wiring inside the lid hinge, broken by years of the lid being flung open
Repair steps: unplug the thin white/black lead running up the hinge and measure it: 1,000–3,000Ω expected. If it reads OL, open up the hinge, inspect the wire and re-solder it before ordering any part. If the wiring is sound but there is still no heat, check the warm thermostat for a stuck-open contact.
Do not condemn the lid element straight away — the hinge wiring is usually the answer.
Root cause: the control side is fine, the power side is not — burnt relay contacts, or an open main element
Repair steps: listen for the click when you start a cook. No click points at the coil driver; a click with no output means burnt relay contacts — fit the same part with an equal or higher current rating. Then ohm the main element and confirm it falls in the 30–100Ω band.
Root cause: the controller is being fed bad data — a failed NTC or broken sensor lead, or a loose/severed TXD-RXD link between the two boards
Repair steps: pull the NTC and measure at room temperature (50–100kΩ), then warm it and confirm the reading falls smoothly. If the sensor is good, inspect the 4-wire connector (VCC/GND/TXD/RXD) for looseness, corrosion or rodent damage and reseat it — plenty of these end with nothing more than a properly seated connector.
Root cause: the touch keys work through small springs pressed against the plastic fascia; kitchen steam and grime upset the readings
Repair steps: take the display board out, polish the spring tips with a pencil eraser, clean the inside of the fascia, and gently stretch the springs so they sit straight and make firm contact. Reassemble and the problem is usually gone.
Look closely at the circuit: the thermal fuse sits on the live wire while the micro switch interrupts the neutral. The consequence is that one element terminal stays at 220 V for as long as the cooker is plugged in — lever down for Cook or popped up for Warm, it makes no difference.
A mechanical cooker has no real "off" switch anyway: the lever popping up changes mode, it does not cut power. Even with those contacts open, only the return path is broken — the appliance is never isolated from the mains.
For the technician: "it has popped up" or "it is not cooking" does not mean it is safe. The only thing that truly de-energises the unit is pulling the plug. Every reading in the test-point table must be taken unplugged, and never touch the element's spade terminals while it is plugged in.

🔗 The L/N/G system and the ghost voltage that fools a test screwdriver are covered in Home Wiring & Safety. The same lesson appears in Electric Fan Motor — set the fan sim to speed 0 and notice the dashed line still sitting at the switch.
- Never bridge the thermal fuse with wire or foil. The cooker will work again — and you will have removed the last fire protection from someone's kitchen. If the switch ever welds shut, nothing at all will stop the element.
- A replacement fuse must match the original temperature rating (172°C means 172°C). Fitting a higher one just buys the fire more time.
- The green/yellow earth wire goes back on tight, every time. The steel chassis sits close to live terminals, and wet hands are normal in a kitchen.
- Digital models: the board capacitor stays charged after unplugging. Give it a moment, keep bare fingers off the input-side components, and never probe or handle the board while it is plugged in.
- Watch for hidden screws: newer models tuck the base-plate screws under the energy-label sticker or the rubber feet. Find them all before levering anything, or you will crack the customer's plastic.
- Never yank the lid off. The lid element's wiring runs down through the hinge pin. Photograph the connections first, release the leads at the base, then feed the wire gently back up.
- Test with plain water — 2 or 3 cups — before returning it. Confirm it releases into Warm by itself, the lamps change correctly, and there is no leakage (element terminal to chassis must read OL).
