What Kind of Motor Is It?

Almost every household fan uses a single-phase capacitor-run AC motor — a capacitor creates a rotating magnetic field that starts and sustains the spin. Inside, three windings share the same core:

Role
Keeps the motor spinning; energized the whole time the fan runs
Provides starting torque; thinner wire than the run winding, works with the capacitor — since a fan is a capacitor-run motor, this winding stays energized the whole time like the run winding, it is not switched out after starting
Drops voltage to slow the motor; split into 2 sections so the switch gives 3 speeds

The run, start, and choke windings all meet at a common point C inside the motor (factory-wired in series) — measuring across leads R and S gives the highest combined reading, around 750 Ω
Lead 3 taps the choke end at the common point, so it bypasses the choke entirely (0 Ω) and gets full voltage → fastest; lead 2 goes through one section (~80 Ω); lead 1 through both (~160 Ω) → slowest

Measuring Windings to Diagnose Faults

Set the multimeter to resistance mode and measure across each pair of leads. Winding faults fall into 3 patterns:

Normal winding

Reads close to spec (run ~350 Ω, start ~400 Ω, each choke section ~80 Ω). Values vary a little between brands depending on wire gauge.

(Open)⚠ Open winding

The needle never moves (infinite / OL) — the wire has broken internally, often from heat build-up

(Shorted turns)🔴 Shorted turns

Reads 0 or far below normal (e.g. under 100 Ω) — insulation between turns has failed and shorted internally; the motor runs hot and draws abnormally high current

Main Parts of the Fan Circuit

Before repairing, know the 5 parts that make up the fan's electrical path, from the plug through to the windings:

  1. สายเสียบปลั๊กไฟ (AC Cord)AC Cord — นำไฟจากเต้ารับเข้าเครื่องbrings mains power into the unit
  2. สวิตช์ควบคุมความเร็ว (Speed Switch)Speed Switch — เลือกว่าจะป้อนไฟผ่านขดโช้คมากหรือน้อย (ตำแหน่ง 1/2/3)selects how much choke winding is in the path (position 1/2/3)
  3. คาปาซิเตอร์ (Capacitor)Capacitor — ต่อคร่อมระหว่างสาย R กับ S ทำให้มันไป อนุกรมกับขดสตาร์ท (ไม่ใช่ขนานกับขดสตาร์ท) ช่วยเลื่อนเฟสกระแสให้เกิดสนามแม่เหล็กหมุน จึงมีแรงบิดออกตัวและหมุนต่อเนื่อง connects between leads R and S, which puts it in series with the start winding (not in parallel with it). It shifts the current phase to create the rotating field that both starts and keeps the motor turning
  5. เทอร์โมฟิวส์ (Thermal Fuse)Thermal Fuse — ฝังอยู่ในกลุ่มขดลวด ต่ออนุกรมอยู่ในเส้นทางไฟของมอเตอร์ ปกติวัดได้ราว 0 Ω แต่ถ้าขดลวดร้อนเกินพิกัด (มักราว 120–150 °C แล้วแต่รุ่น) จะขาดถาวร ต่อกลับไม่ได้ ต้องเปลี่ยนใหม่ — พัดลมที่ "ไฟเข้าแต่ไม่ทำงานเลยทุกเบอร์" ให้สงสัยตัวนี้ไว้ด้วยเสมอ (ดูวิธีเช็คในหัวข้อพัดลม 6 สาย) buried inside the winding bundle, in series with the motor's supply path. It normally reads about 0 Ω, but once the winding overheats past its rating (typically 120–150 °C depending on the model) it opens permanently and must be replaced. A fan that is "getting power but dead on every speed" is a classic symptom (see the 6-wire section for how to check it)
Try It — Where the Current Flows at Each Speed

Press a switch position below and watch the current path through the fan's actual circuit. The moving dots are conventional current (+ to −). Notice that the higher the position, the less choke winding the current passes through, so more voltage reaches the motor.

—โช้คที่กระแสต้องผ่านchoke in the path
🔀 ที่จุดร่วม C กระแสแยกเป็น 2 ทางเสมอ (ทั้งขดรันและขดสตาร์ททำงานพร้อมกันตลอดเวลา) 🔀 At common point C the current always splits in two (both windings work all the time)
  • Run branch (blue) — from C through the 350 Ω run winding, out lead R, straight back to neutral. This is the main current that produces the running torque.
  • Start branch (red) — from C through the 400 Ω start winding, out lead S, then through the capacitor before returning to neutral. The capacitor makes this current lead the run current by roughly 90°. (Its far end joins the neutral rail, which is already the same node as lead R — so it is bridging R–S exactly as most worksheets draw it.)
  • Because the two fields peak at different instants and the windings sit at an angle to each other, the result is a rotating magnetic field that drags the rotor around — this is why a single-phase motor needs a start winding and a capacitor. If the capacitor fails, the fan will not start on its own and needs a push.
  • A fan is a permanent-split-capacitor (PSC) motor, so the capacitor stays in circuit permanently — it is not switched out after starting like the capacitor-start motor in a water pump.

Finding Leads — Older Fans (5 Wires)

On older fans all 5 leads (R, S, 1, 2, 3) are the same length, since every one of them routes down to the switch at the base. If the original colors are unknown, work through these steps:

The pair with the highest reading (about 750 Ω) is the one that connects to the capacitor (this is the R–S pair)

Fault check: if the needle never moves, the run or start winding is open

Hold one meter lead on either capacitor lead (no need to know yet which is R and which is S — step 3 sorts that out, and either one gives the same ordering), then use the other to probe the remaining 3 leads
    2. Lowest value 👉 wire to switch position 3 (fastest)
    4. Middle value 👉 switch position 2
    6. Highest value 👉 switch position 1 (slowest)
Hold one lead on switch position 3, and probe both capacitor leads with the other. Whichever reads lower resistance is the run-winding end — connect the plug's neutral (N) there
Finding Leads — Newer Fans (6 Wires)

Newer fans mount the capacitor right on top of the motor housing, so 2 short leads up top are already wired to it, leaving 4 long leads down to the base: 1 neutral (N) and 3 switch leads

Find neutral (N) and check the thermal fuse: (N) Twist the 2 short top leads together temporarily. Probe there with one meter lead and check all 4 long leads with the other — the one reading 0 Ω is neutral (N)

Fault check: if nothing reads at all, the thermal fuse has blown

Untwist the 2 short leads and wire them straight to the capacitor

This pair should read about 750 Ω — if it reads nothing, a winding is open

Hold one meter lead on the long neutral (N), and probe the remaining 3 long leads with the other
    2. Highest reading 👉 switch position 1 (slowest)
    4. Middle reading 👉 switch position 2 (medium)
    6. Lowest reading 👉 switch position 3 (fastest)
Technician Notes
  • Meter range: on an analog multimeter, the X10 range is easiest to read (multiply the dial reading by 10 for the true ohm value)
  • Ohm-value caveat: the stated resistances are just typical values — a larger motor with thicker wire can read lower without being faulty
  • Calling a short: a shorted winding drops resistance dramatically and obviously (e.g. below 100 Ω); a reading higher than typical is usually not a fault — makers sometimes use thinner wire to cut cost

Safety & Cautions
Always unplug before measuring

Resistance measurements must always be made with the circuit unpowered, or the meter can be damaged and the user injured. Discharge the capacitor (short its terminals through a resistor or an insulated screwdriver) before touching it.
