(Kirchhoff's Laws)
Kirchhoff's Laws
Solving circuits Ohm's Law alone cannot
Ohm's Law works on one component at a time — know two values and you get the third. But once a circuit has branches or more than one source, you often know neither the current nor the voltage of a branch, so there is nowhere to start.
Gustav Kirchhoff (1845) added two laws describing how the whole circuit must behave, giving us enough equations to solve for every unknown.
At any node, the sum of currents flowing in equals the sum flowing out.
The physics: a node is just a junction of wires, not a tank — charge cannot pile up there. Whatever flows in must flow straight back out (conservation of charge).
Where you actually use it: this is why parallel circuits divide current, and it is exactly how an ELCB / RCD works — it watches for the current out on L and the current back on N not matching. The difference is leakage.
Going once around any closed loop, all the voltages sum to zero.
The physics: voltage is energy per charge. Walking a loop back to where you started is like walking a hill and returning to the same spot — the net change in height must be zero, or you did not really return.
Where you actually use it: KVL is why a voltage divider works, and it is what a technician relies on when probing a chain point by point — if the supplied voltage is not dropping across the load, it is dropping across something else, like a burnt contact or a wire broken inside.
Ohm's Law alone cannot solve this circuit — two sources feed the same node. Change any value and watch both laws stay true no matter what.
Pick one node as ground (0 V) — usually the negative rail of the supply.
Guessing wrong is fine — the answer simply comes out negative, which reads as "flows the other way".
With n nodes you get n−1 independent equations (the ground node needs none).
One per non-overlapping loop, substituting I×R for each resistor's voltage.
Always check: substitute back into KCL — if in does not equal out, something is wrong.
โจทย์: V1 = 12 V, V2 = 9 V, R1 = 100 Ω, R2 = 150 Ω, R3 = 220 Ω จงหา I1, I2, I3
Given: V1 = 12 V, V2 = 9 V, R1 = 100 Ω, R2 = 150 Ω, R3 = 220 Ω. Find I1, I2, I3.
Result |
|---|---|---|
| I₁ | (12 − 8.486) / 100 | 35.1 mA |
| I₂ | (9 − 8.486) / 150 | 3.4 mA |
| I₃ | 8.486 / 220 | 38.6 mA |
12 − (0.0351 × 100) − (0.0386 × 220) = 12 − 3.51 − 8.49 ≈ 0 ✓ ✅ Check with KCL: 35.1 + 3.4 = 38.5 ≈ 38.6 mA ✓ (rounding only)
✅ Check with KVL, left loop: 12 − (0.0351 × 100) − (0.0386 × 220) = 12 − 3.51 − 8.49 ≈ 0 ✓
The equation you just wrote by hand is exactly what this site's virtual breadboard solves every frame. The method is Nodal Analysis / MNA — the same one SPICE and every circuit design tool uses:
- Find every node first (holes connected on the breadboard are one node)
- Write one KCL equation per node → an n×n matrix
- Solve it for the voltage at every node, then get currents back from Ohm's Law
- Non-linear parts (diodes, transistors) are guessed and re-solved until the answer settles
